A Comprehensive Guide to Mazunte, Oaxaca: Mexico’s Turtle & Yoga Haven (2024)

Aug 5, 2024

Nestled on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mazunte is a charming pueblo magico known for its bohemian atmosphere, vibrant yoga community, stunning sunsets, and a dedicated turtle sanctuary.

Despite its growing popularity, Mazunte remains relatively off the beaten path, preserving its authentic Mexican small beach town charm. It’s a favorite among yoga enthusiasts and features boutique eco-resorts, making it an ideal destination for a tranquil Mexican beach getaway.

Mazunte offers an authentic, affordable, and unique experience compared to more commercialized resorts like Cancun and Tulum. Whether you’re into yoga, beach activities, or simply looking for a peaceful vacation spot, Mazunte is a fantastic choice.

My Mazunte Travel Guide

During my stay in Mazunte and nearby Zipolite, I extended my visit far longer than planned, captivated by its charm. Here’s my detailed travel guide to help you plan your trip and enjoy this enchanting Mexican beach town.

Where is Mazunte, Mexico?

Mazunte is a small beach town on Mexico’s Pacific Coast in the Oaxaca state, located about 265 km south of Oaxaca City. It lies between the popular beach destinations of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, both of which have small airports.

Zipolite, a neighboring town famous for being Mexico’s only official nudist beach, is another laid-back hippie retreat nearby. Getting to Mazunte can be a bit challenging, which helps it retain its untouched beauty.

Why is Mazunte a Pueblo Magico?

Mazunte is a quaint pueblo mágico with thatched and adobe buildings, flanked by two stunning beaches on either side of Punta Cometa, a magical wave-lashed headland.

Designated as a Pueblo Magico in 2015 by the Mexican government, this status recognizes Mazunte’s natural beauty, unique culture, and dedication to environmental and cultural preservation.

Things to Do in Mazunte

One of the best things about Mazunte is its relaxing vibe. You can unwind in the cafes and appreciate the street art. For those seeking more activity, there’s plenty to do, from exploring beaches to engaging in yoga and connecting with nature.

Relax on Mazunte’s Beaches

Mazunte boasts two pristine beaches, separated by Punta Cometa. The golden sands and lush green mountains create a picturesque paradise, though the currents can be strong, making it prime for surfing rather than swimming.

  • Playa Mazunte & Playa Rinconcito: The main beach, Playa Mazunte, is popular and easily accessible, with several restaurants and beach bars. Playa Rinconcito at the west end offers calmer waters, ideal for swimming.
  • Playa Mermejita: A quieter alternative, perfect for strolling and watching the sunset, though swimming is discouraged due to strong currents.
  • Nearby Beaches: Zipolite, San Agustinillo, and Puerto Angel are nearby and offer more beach options, while Huatulco has upscale resorts and is great for boat trips and snorkeling. Puerto Escondido is known for surfing.
Hike to Punta Cometa at Sunset

Punta Cometa offers stunning views, especially at sunset, and is a significant landmark in Oaxaca. The hike to the sunset point is about 20 minutes and is a popular spiritual ritual.

Join a Yoga and Meditation Class

Mazunte is a hub for yoga retreats and classes, offering various practices like ecstatic dance, cacao ceremonies, and meditation workshops. Hridaya Yoga is well-known for its retreats, including silent meditation. Casa Om and Uma Yoga are other notable options.

Get Involved with Turtle Conservation

Mazunte plays a crucial role in sea turtle conservation, home to the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga. This center offers educational tours and activities, allowing visitors to participate in turtle conservation efforts.

Take a Boat Trip

The waters around Mazunte are rich with marine life, ideal for boat tours where you can spot dolphins, sea turtles, and, during migration season, humpback whales. A day trip to Laguna Ventalilla offers a chance to explore mangroves and wildlife like crocodiles and iguanas.

Where to Stay in Mazunte: Best Hotels

Mazunte offers a range of boutique resorts and budget accommodations, primarily near Playa Rinconcito and Playa Mermejita, or along Calle Rinconcito. It’s advisable to book in advance due to limited availability.
